5 Common Furnace Problems

Staying warm in the winter is everyone's imperative, and we will cover some typical issues that homeowners have with their heat sources in this article.

Thermostat Not Working

The air temperature panel is your home's control center for a comfortable environment. When it doesn't function properly, it can cause you to receive little to no heat, too much heat, or intermittent heart. This can negatively affect both your electric bill and the enjoyment of your home. You may need to install a new battery or replace the thermostat.

Cycling Too Often

Another familiar problem is having a unit that cuts on too often, and that is less effective every time it does. Your machine will be working harder than it needs to, and this could lead to a breakdown. The cause is often due to a dirty filter. To correct this, you may need to clean or replace your filter.

The Blower Doesn't Switch Off

Your tip-off that this is occurring is that you will hear the continuous swirling of the fan blades. This can be happening whether or not the heat element is on, and it can damage the mechanism. This may be occurring due to a faulty limit switch, and you may need to seek professional help.

Pilot Light or Ignition Malfunction

If your heater isn't cutting on or isn't blowing hot air, it could be because the pilot light isn't on. In older gas furnaces, you run the risk of gas escaping into your home. This is of particular concern if your house is well-insulated, as this could lead to an explosion. It is always recommended that you turn off the gas, vent the area, and leave fixing your furnace to an expert.

Reduced Air Flow

A problem with air flow can cause overheating, and it likely has to do with the belts, bearings, or ducts. It can be caused by a lack of general maintenance, and as with some of the other items, it is advised you consult with someone trained in HVAC.
