Common Drain Issues That Require A Professional

Drainage issues range from minor to extreme, and even a tiny clog can eventually lead to major water damage on your property. While minor drain issues can often be resolved on your own, there are also times when it is best to call in a professional. This is because using the wrong method can cause you to make the problem worse, such as pushing a clog so deep in the line that it cannot be reached on your own. When you notice that your drains don't work right, consider these situations when it is better to call for help.

Clogs and Backups That Appear Deep

There are several smaller drains in your house that eventually all meet up at the main drain line. Since everything runs out the main line, it is normal for debris, soap scum and other gunk to get stuck there over time. When this happens, you will notice that your drains all seem slower than normal. You may also hear gurgling sounds when you flush the toilet or experience frequent backups. Since a regular hardware store drain snake won't reach this far, you will need to have a professional use their equipment to locate and remove the clog.

Cracks and Breaks In the Line

Trying to clean your drain out the wrong way can break your drain pipes since caustic drain cleaners can eat away at the materials. It is also possible for cracks to develop over time due to changes in the foundation or ground that it is buried in. Tree roots are another common cause of cracked pipes. You may detect these as water spots in your lawn or discover a leak underneath your sink. Since breaks in the line pose sanitary and structural issues, a repair must be completed right away.

You can do your part to prevent drainage problems by watching what you put down your sink and toilet. Then, have your lines inspected and repaired at the first sign of a developing problem.
