How Can I Force the Air out of My Pipes?

Air in pipes

From time to time, homeowners experience screeching or banging noises from their water pipes.  This can happen if air gets trapped at high points in your water supply.  Usually, this creates nothing more than an annoying sound with a pretty correctable solution.  The professionals at Heaney Plumbing & Heating feel that most of the time, homeowners can correct this problem without having to call a plumber.

If you hear your pipes screech, or perhaps rattle a little when they are in use, make sure that the water supply is turned on.  If it is on, it is likely that the noises are caused by trapped air.  The experts at Heaney Plumbing & Heating suggest that homeowners turn on every faucet or appliance that uses water beginning at faucets and appliances closest to the water source.  For most homeowners, this process would begin in a basement.

After turning on both the HOT and COLD water, be sure to flush toilets as you work your way to faucets farther away from the water source. For homeowners who reside in a two-story house with a basement, the process would begin in the basement, then continue on the main floor, and lastly, on the top floor.

After about 15 minutes, the water should flow normally.  When this happens, it is likely that the air has been flushed out.  Turning the water off should begin where you left off.  So, for our two story homeowners, they would turn the water off upstairs, wait about five more minutes and turn the water off on the main floor, wait an additional few minutes and shut the water off in the basement.

If this process does not stop the screeching or banging, something more serious might be going on, such as improperly installed water pipes, or perhaps a blockage at the water source.  In these instances, trusted professionals are necessary.  Contact the professionals at Heaney Plumbing & Heating today to learn how they can fix the annoying noises before a more serious problem develops.
