How to Fix a Leaky Faucet

That slow, annoying drip coming out of your faucet is not only aggravating, but it can also be costly.  If left untreated, slow drips can become steady, which can really impact the water bill over time.  Sometimes it is necessary to contact a plumbing professional to fix leaky faucets, but there are some things that homeowners can try in an effort to tackle the problem themselves first.

At Heaney Plumbing & Heating, we recommend the following steps to fix most compression faucets.  Compression faucets have a two handles, or knobs (one for HOT, the other COLD).  

1. Turn the water off underneath the sink.  To do this, locate the shut off valves on the pipes that go into the sink.
2. Remove the cap on each handle.  These usually pop off or screw off, depending upon the type of faucet.  
3. After removing the caps, remove the handle screw.
4. Pull the handle off and use a wrench to remove the nut.
5. After removing the nut, take the seat washer off and replace it.  We suggest taking the old washer with you to the hardware store to help match the size.  Coat the washers in plumber’s grease.
6. Locate the O-Ring, which is found underneath the seat washer.  Remove and replace the O-Ring (again, take the O-Ring with you to ensure the correct size).  Apply plumber’s grease to the O-Ring and reinstall.

After following these steps, put everything back together and turn the water back on (underneath the sink).  Next, turn on the faucet.  If the leak persists, it is probably time to contact your local plumber.
