How to Prepare Your Furnace for the Winter

As winter approaches, the temperature is steadily dropping. The time to turn on your heater will be here quickly. Do you simply switch it on at the first sign of a chilly house? If so, you may be causing more harm than good. There are regular routine steps that should be taken to prepare your furnace for the winter. By taking these steps, you can help maintain your furnace and ensure that you and your family will be comfortable and cozy all winter long.

Step 1: Change Your Air Filter

Changing out air filters should be done throughout the year regularly, not just when the air conditioner is running. A fresh air filter helps to improve air quality and is less taxing on your furnace.

Step 2: Clean the Furnace and Chimney

Another way to improve the efficiency of your furnace is to wipe away all the dust and debris that has settled on it over the past year. A simple dust rag works well to clean it. Also, check for signs of rust as you are wiping it down. Make sure the chimney is free of bird nests, debris and soot buildup to prevent potential fire hazards.

Step 3: Perform a Test Run on the Thermostat

Prior to using your furnace regularly, turn the furnace up high and make sure the thermostat is working correctly. Do this test in the fall so that there is plenty of time to correct the thermostat before temperatures get too cold.

Step 4: Make Sure Heating Vents are Uncovered

Sometimes during the year when these vents are not in use, things such as furniture may end up covering them up. If your vents are covered up not only are they useless, they can increase your heating bill and cause your furnace to overheat.

These simple steps will ensure that your home is warm and comfortable once the temperatures drop.
