Plumbing Problems Home Buyers Should Look For

Buying a home is one of the most significant financial decisions one makes in their lifetime. As a buyer, you should be sure to check these critical plumping items before buying a home. Failing to uncover any underlying issues, can end up causing a massive financial hardship once the problems are discovered, and you have to pay for the repairs.

One of the first things to look for is stains on the ceilings or walls. Stains on the walls or ceiling especially brown stains are usually a sure sign of water damage. If you see stains, it could mean pipes are leaking in the walls or ceiling and requires additional exploration to uncover the extent of the issues.

Home buyers should also look for signs of water leaking around the toilets, sinks, and showers. A small leak may not seem like a big deal; however, if the leak has been ongoing for an extended period, there may be underlying damage to the floor that is not visible. Buyers should also flush all the toilets and run the sinks to look for active leaks while the water is running.

Checking the type of pipes in the home is another critical plumbing concern. If the house has lead pipes, one will most likely want to have them replaced. It will be essential to have a professional give you an estimate before moving forward with the purchase as replacing lead pipes can be expensive. If the pipes do not need replacing, buyers should check to make sure they are properly insulated so that the pipes are not at risk of freezing and bursting in the winter months.

If you suspect the home has plumbing issues, you need to have a professional plumber come to the house and conduct an inspection. An expert examination will help you understand the seriousness of any problems and help you decide if purchasing the home is a wise financial decision.
