Warning Signs of a Clogged Sewer Line

Clogged Sewer Line

A clogged sewer line is a common, yet serious issue in a household. It can not only make using the bathroom the bathroom difficult, but it can also affect every drain in the home. As such, it's vital to pay close attention to the early signs of a clogged sewer line so that you can make a call to a plumber and avoid finding yourself in the middle of an expensive emergency.

Multiple Drains Are Clogged

This is a very obvious sign of a clogged sewer line. Toilets are especially affected by this, but so are showers, sinks, and bathtubs. Your kitchen and bathroom appliances may drain slowly or stop draining completely.

Pungent Smell Fills the Atmosphere

The odor of raw sewage filling your home is another sign of clogged drains. No one would be able to miss the stench.

Simultaneous Drain Back-Ups

If flushing the toilet causes the water to back up or show up in the bathtub, it's a sign of a clogged drain. Since the water in the toilet can't go down the drain, it usually flows through the shower. If water flows out your washing machine and the toilet simultaneously, the sewer line could be the issue. Turn on the sink, and let the water run for a minute. If the toilet bubbles or if water is rising in it when you turn on the sink and let the water run, it's a sign of a clogged line and trapped air.
