What Causes A Pipe To Burst?

A burst water pipe may inflict tremendous damage. In addition to destroying the piping, it can ruin ceilings, insulation and drywall. Serious mold problems might develop. This disaster could produce an enormous water supply bill as well. It usually happens during cold weather, but may occur at any time of year. There are a few different reasons why a pipe might suddenly rupture and leak.

Frozen

If the indoor temperature drops to 32F, water could freeze inside of pipes. It expands in the process of changing from a fluid to solid ice. The water pressure might also rise in unfrozen portions of an affected pipe. Consequently, excessive pressure and/or expansion eventually causes piping to explode. This is more likely to happen if a heating system fails or the weather becomes unusually cold.

Decaying

Old pipes occasionally rupture due to rust or corrosion. A pipe's walls can weaken and become unable to withstand the pressure. Constant exposure to water puts the metal at risk of decay, especially if it's located in a moist part of a building. This problem is most common in homes with steel plumbing. Pipes are more prone to deterioration in dwellings constructed over 50 years ago.

Clogs

A clogged pump or toilet has the potential to greatly increase the pressure level inside of pipes. Extreme pressure sometimes causes the piping to rupture and release large amounts of water into the home. Such disasters are more probable in buildings with poorly maintained equipment. It's vital to promptly address any plumbing problems before they become this severe.

Basically, pipes usually burst as a result of excessive internal pressure and/or structural weakness. This may occur due to clogged fixtures, decaying materials or frigid temperatures. Residents can avoid such problems by calling plumbers when deteriorating pipes need replacement or plumbing fixtures fail to work properly. It's also crucial for building owners to adequately insulate exterior walls and piping in any region that experiences sub-freezing temperatures.
