What Does a Sump Pump Do?

Sump Pump

While many people think that flooding can only happen in areas susceptible to tropical storms and hurricanes, the truth of the matter is that any home can experience basement flooding under the right conditions. It doesn’t take much rainfall to flood a basement, which could result in thousands of dollars of damage and could potentially lead to mold and mildew growth throughout the home. In order to combat the possibility of flooding, sump pumps are installed in many new homes. These pumps are vital for keeping your home safe and dry.

Pumping Water

A sump pump sits in the lowest level of your home, in a small well located in a basement or crawl space. The sump pump will detect when the water level beneath the foundation is rising, and it will pump the water out of the home to a safe place, protecting the home from the effects of flooding. This will keep water from collecting and rising, and prevent flooding in basements in low-lying areas.

Pump Maintenance

In order for a pump to function properly, it needs to be connected to a power source. This is extremely important, since a pump that isn’t plugged in won’t do you any good. Some pumps are designed to run on portable power sources that will continue to operate even in the event of a power outage, which can happen in a major rainstorm. It’s always a good idea to test your pump out every spring before the rainy season occurs by pouring some water into the well and listening for the pump activation.

If your sump pump has started acting up -- or worse, stopped working completely -- you need to call a plumber right away to avoid potential flood damage.
