Why Is Water Leaking from My Furnace?

There is nothing more frustrating for a homeowner than dealing with heating and cooling problems. If you’ve discovered water pooling around your furnace, you may be dealing with a problem that needs to be remedied before it causes a more serious issue.

Here are a few of the common reasons why your furnace would be leaking water:

Furnace Humidifier

One of the most frequent causes of a leaky furnace is a faulty internal humidifier.  There are a number of reasons why your internal humidifier might result in a leak. A professional heating technician should be able to easily diagnose the specific issue.  It is important to have this remedied as soon as possible, as a faulty humidifier could potentially damage other parts of your furnace.

Condensation Leak

High-efficiency furnaces have cool exhaust, and as a result they may produce condensation.  Normally, this condensation is funneled into a floor drain. If you are experiencing puddles of water surrounding your furnace, it might be an indicator of clogged or broken tubing.

A standard furnace, when working properly, will not produce condensation of any kind. If the flue pipe of your furnace was sized incorrectly at the time of installation, it may be causing your exhaust to cool down and condense in the pipe before being properly drained back into the furnace, resulting in a leak.

Secondary Heat Exchanger

If the source of your leak is the secondary heat exchanger, it could mean a very serious problem. This is not a common issue, but it should be remedied immediately to avoid potential safety problems.

The best way to ensure that your problem is properly diagnosed and remedied is to contact a professional HVAC technician.
